2013-12CollaborationIn December, we get bombarded by year-end lists–the best albums, movies, books, TV shows of 2013. We love trends. We want to know what’s popular. We want to evaluate the lists…agree or disagree with the rankings.

So, I am jumping on the “year-end list” bandwagon! Based on my interaction with IIBA leaders, corporate executives, and BAs and PMs on all levels of the career ladder, here are my top three 2013 innovation trends.

Collaboration is King
Our lean times over the last several years took us away from true collaboration and rewarded us for working solo. We are realizing the downfalls of independent work and need to reconnect and fuel innovation. Teams and organizations are embracing collaboration. They are investing in training and tools that will empower teams to collaborate.

Virtual Meetings
Another hot industry topic this year–the pain points associated with virtual meetings. Executives, project leaders and stakeholders across the country struggle with multi tasking, low engagement levels, lack of creativity, etc.

In 2013, many companies began to co-locate teams and eliminate telecommuting, but we can’t escape the need for virtual collaboration. Consolidating employees by geography is unrealistic and unnecessary. We have the technology to conduct effective virtual meetings. Techniques are key! Look for BA-Squared to bring solutions to improve your virtual meetings in 2014!

Fail Fast
Failing fast is about learning fast! Project teams need to identify where and when it’s okay to fail fast by examining value and risk. Teams also need to understand where they need 100% accuracy in order to bring value. This is a tough decision and requires strategic, collaborative analysis to get the right answers. Project teams that embrace fast failure need to continually challenge each other to evaluate where a “fail fast” mentality benefits the team. In many organizations, allowing “fail fast” learning can maximize value.
